Panties in a Bunch Over Pink Ouija Boards?

6 February, 2010

One of the toys that we three kids played with when I was younger was an Ouija board.  Oddly, no matter what question was asked, or by whom, the answer usually matched the thoughts of the oldest of the three.  Not little (((Billy))).  Harmless fun.  Well, for me, annoying.  For my older sisters, fun.

Years later, I discovered that Ouija boards were not viewed as harmless fun.  They were, according to one local preacher (local (at this time) being Western Maryland) decried the boards as a gateway to Satanism.  As marijuana leads inexorably to opium, so Ouija leads directly to Satanic cults, orgies, human sacrifice. atheism, Darwinism, voting Democrat, alcoholism, divorce, and viewing the Bible as allegorical.  Apparently, Christians (the specific subset of literalist Christians (and selected others)) are so insecure that they think a children’s game — a boring children’s game — is a threat to their belief system. Christianist Values: Jesus on a Sniper Scope!

19 January, 2010

Trijicon  is, by most accounts, a reputable member of the national defense establishment and the NRA.  I know that they produce excellent scopes for rifles — for hunting trophies, for meat, and for hunting humans (real quick caveat:  I do not hunt but I have no real problem with most hunters;  I also understand the ethics and efficacy of military sniping — neither is the point of this post (not that that will stop some, but . . .)).  It would appear that they are, at some level, full-blown Christianists looking to ‘save’ the Middle East (after all, those ragheads are worshipping the wrong misogynistic psychopathic ‘god(s)’) for the greater glory of the eternal paradise of  . . .   Sorry. They Just Can’t Help Themselves, Can They?

14 January, 2010

The earthquake in Haiti is tragic and horrific.  And the response from America was quick — U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard units were underway within, literally, hours.  And the the response from one of the most prolific mouthpieces of the religious right was adding insult within, literally, hours. An Addendum to A Kentucky Hat Trick of Stupid

12 September, 2009

Oddly (and this is from Ed Brayton’s Dispatches from the Culture Wars), kids from Breckinridge High School, in Kentucky, do not need parental permission to be taken to a  Baptist revival by their football coach.  The kids did  need a signed permission slip from their parents to listen to Barrack Obama’s education pep talk! The Right is Wrong Again: Gay Marriage Does not Hurt Marriage

8 September, 2009

Six years ago, the state supreme court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts handed down the utterly radical decision that human rights applied to all humans.  Not heterosexual humans.  Not Christian humans.  Not conservative humans.  All humans.  Including Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered humans.  Which meant, of course, that gay marriage, which is a civil human right (not a religious right), had to be legal in the commonwealth.

And, of course, the reaction of the radical right fringe of America was quick: Read the rest of this entry ?

Keep Your Kids Home From School to Protest the Importance of Education?

2 September, 2009

I suspect that all of us have relatives or friends who have bought into the fear and loathing , lies and deceit, and the dishonesty and vitriol of the radical political and religious right.  And I suspect that many of you get emails with the latest absurd meme being pushed by Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, Dobbs, Coulter, Drudge,or any of sundry other right-wing talking heads.

Today, I got one dropped into my family email.  I had already thoroughly trashed the sender when I noticed that a DailyKos bloggerby the name of Jed Lewison had gotten virtually the same email.  Which means that many of you may have gotten it.  And your average right-wing teabagging NOMer has probably gotten it and passed it on a hundred times by now.  I swear that a right-wing meme can sweep the country before the truth can even get its pants on (sorry, Sam Clemens). I Get Mail. And It Isn’t Nearly As Exciting As It Should Be.

19 August, 2009

Today, I got an email from Tina Jane.  I  did not recognize the address, or the mailer, but, after doing a quick McAfee scan, I clicked.  Then I clicked over to a Google document.  And I realized that I was being witnessed via billytheatheist (at) gmail.com as I read: Read the rest of this entry ?

How Many Would Vote for Palin?

21 July, 2009

This was sent by my best friend:

I don’t like the word “idiot,” but sometimes …

 IDIOT SIGHTING:
We had to have the garage door repaired. The Sears repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a ‘large’ enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one Sears made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, ‘Lady, you need a 1/4 horsepower.’ I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4. He said, ‘NO, it’s not.’ Four is larger than two…’

We haven’t used Sears Repair since. Read the rest of this entry ?
