American Jihadists? Yee-Fucking-Ha!!

3 March, 2010

I have been asked, through email and through comments, why I, as an atheist, give a flying fuck about theists — about what believers do, or think, or believe.  Why do I blog about religion and belief in god(s) if I am an unbeliever?

There are many reasons I blog.  I blog to help me understand who I am.  I blog to poke fun at political and religious absurdity.  And I blog because I am scared abso-fucking-lutely shitless about the radical right.

Here is a perfect example:  Repent Amarillo (warning:  very obnoxious music so turn your speakers off or down before you go there) (and I found this through Pharyngula).

Yes, it really does say Army of God.  Note the military imagery.  The Woodland bunny camouflage.  The Humvee.  The Fritz helmet with the cross.  The call to jihad;  sorry, I mean ‘Spiritual warfare.’

So what do these army wannabes actually plan to do? According to the website, they will have two different groups:  an intercessory prayer who

will at times be visible to the public and at other times ( depending upon the individual mission) they will be inconspicuous. They will provide prayer covering to the soldier group and will do battle within the spiritual realm to prepare the ground for the planting of God’s seeds, tear down demonic strongholds, and cast out demonic spirits that harass our efforts. Sometimes the intercessory prayer group will operate independently of the soldier group and at other times will work around them.

There will also be a soldier’s group who

will consist of warriors dedicated to witnessing to groups of unbelievers or one-on-one witnessing. This group will be more visible to the public and will be comprised of bold believers willing to confront the world. This group will be schooled in the “Way of the Master” method of witnessing to the lost. This group will be the ones who plant God’s seeds in the ground that has been prepared by the intercessory prayer group. Believers who participate in this group will have to be bold but loving. Confrontational but composed. The individual members of these two groups are allowed and highly encouraged to move between the two groups based on the individual’s calling and the unique mission involved. In other words, no one is stuck to only one group. Soldiers can pray and intercessory members can witness.

“Plant God’s seeds in the ground”?  Wasn’t that the ‘Sin of Onan?’  You know, Genesis 38:9?  Sorry.  Mind wandering.

The targets for the prayer and combat groups?

Some of the possible missions that these two groups may be called upon to work will be some of the following:

  1. Gay pride events.
  2. Earth worship events such as “Earth Day”
  3. Pro-abortion events or places such as Planned Parenthood
  4. Breast cancer events such as “Race for the Cure” to illuminate the link between abortion and breast cancer.
  5. Opening day of public schools to reach out to students.
  6. Spring break events.
  7. Demonically based concerts.
  8. Halloween events.
  9. Other events that may arise that the ministry feels called to confront.

These large events may involve both the intercessory prayer AND the soldier groups. Some of the smaller events that can be accomplished in between the larger events may be:

  1. Sexually oriented businesses such as pornography shops, strip joints, and XXX-rated theaters.
  2. Idolatry locations such as palm readers, false religions, and witchcraft. Many of the smaller missions listed above may be just prayer oriented missions for tearing down demonic strongholds or they may involve more aggressive use of soldiers and prayer warriors. Some other missions occasionally employed may be “undercover operations” where the groups show up together but are not publicly visible together to effect the outcome of a public meeting such as city commissioners meetings, etc.

Does anyone else see this ending badly?  Sending poorly trained (or (more likely) untrained) men and women out into public, calling them holy warriors and soldiers for god, to combat evil (including, but not limited to, acting like human beings) is a recipe for bloodshed.  It is a promise of escalation, misunderstanding, and miscalculation.  Will one of their jihadists step over the line and join the ranks of Eric Rudolph, Scott Roeder, or Clayton Waagner

I served in the United States Army.  I wasn’t real good at it, but I volunteered and devoted a part of my life to defence of the Constitution of the United States of America.  I was willing to put my life, literally, on the line to defend freedom.  It sounds hokey, but that’s what I signed up for:  98GL sigint linguist, Army Intelligence.  The America envisioned by Repent Amarillo is not the America of the Constitution, nor the America our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have promised to defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic.  The America envisioned by these asshats is the one promised by Palin, Robertson, Focus on the Family, the American Family Council and the Grand Old Party.  An America reduced to the ‘religious democracy’ of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

I have been asked why I blog.  Why I write about religion and politics.  I write to, in my small way, affect the body politic.  The more widely I, and others, spread stories such as this, the more we spread the light of publicity on the seamy underside of conservative Christianity and conservative politics, the less likely they are to carry out their theocratic authoritarian plans.  And the longer we can remain free in this flawed experiment called liberal secular democracy.

  1. Nice post, (((Billy))). I wanted to get that said quickly, because chappy’s probably going to stop by and quote “Onward, Christian Soldiers” at some point in this thread.

    I’m totally anti-gun. But when I see the words to that song, I always want to go out and buy an uzi to protect myself against the Fundy Army.

  2. And then when you add in the “quiver full” movement with its breeding program to produce those soldiers for god and the home schooling that keeps kids nicely isolated from the mainstream . . . You mentioned Scott Roeder. I worry more about potential Tim McVeighs.

  3. Pssh. They’re using the Way of the Master; it’s only one rung up from Chick Tracts. Not terribly scary.

    Plus, I love the idea that they have a whole back-up group of spineless imbeciles who are too terrified of engaging in real debate that they don’t even bother learning Ray’s nonsense and content themselves with “intercessory prayer”, ie. sitting on their arses doing bugger all. Good gig.

    • I thought the same damn thing. Nice gig. “Uhm, you all go ahead. I’ll be back here, uh, providing spiritual cover. Yeah, that’s it.” LOL!

      Seriously, I played D&D. It was a lot of fun imagining casting spells and all that, but it was a fucking game, and I knew it was a fucking game, and everyone else understood it was a fucking game. Christ, these people are loons!

    • In The Salvation Army, people who specialize in “intercessory prayer” are known as Prayer Warriors. In all fairness, a lot of these prayer warriors are older people who can’t get out and do much, so praying makes them feel like they’re still contributing to the cause. It’s rather sad, actually.

      • Can’t they just bake pies or something?

  4. I look at this and see the Golden Rule in action. The Golden Rule says that I should treat others the way I want to be treated. If I am addicted to self-abuse, pronography, alcohol, beer, worshipping false idols, wordhipping Satan — then I would want someone to pray for my soul and Witness me to the Glory of God as expressed through His Only Begotten Son Jesus Christ. We are told to be warriors for our Faith. This is what is being done in Texas. They are Witnessing others to the Glory of Jesus which is just what their souls cry out for though the person is too affraid of God or angry at God or in denial of God to understand that is what they need so the Witness who acts as the Holy Warrrior is bringing them closer to Jesus just as the Golden Rule (Invented by Jesus Christ) implores them to do. And all you can do in your jealous rage against God is point and laugh. Sad.

    • That’s the crappy Christian variant of the Golden Rule, the one without empathy. See, with empathy you’d have an understanding beyond yourself.

      • There is no variant. The Golden Rule exists. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Empathy says that I put myself in womeone elses shoes and see it from their point of view. A person without a personal relationship with God and Jesus is a sad schell of a human being crying out to be saved. Everyone knows God some just do not recognize the Love of God and Sacrifice of Jesus. I empathize with non-believers and I know what they want and need. Those who don’t beleive want and need the Good News of the Bible. What is so hard about that?

      • The Golden Rule exists.

        Yeah, and it predates Jesus. In the Analects of Confucious, it is stated somewhat differently, “Don’t do to others what you don’t want done to you.”

  5. Some of the possible missions that these two groups may be called upon to work will be some of the following:

    Gay pride events.

    Those guys are always looking for a reason to go to those wickedly seductive Gay Pride events.

    Coincidentally, I was a 98GL (CM) too.

  6. chappy’s probably going to stop by and quote “Onward, Christian Soldiers”…

    Nah. You guys already know that one. But, I doubt that you know this one, sung to the tune of “Marching Through Georgia:”

    1.
    Shout aloud salvation, and we’ll have another song;
    Sing it with a spirit that will start the world along;
    Sing it as our comrades sang it many a thousand strong,
    As they were marching to Glory.

    Chorus:
    March on, march on! we bring the jubilee;
    Fight on, fight on! salvation makes us free;
    We’ll shout our Saviour’s praises over every land and sea
    As we go marching to Glory.

    2.
    How the anxious shout it when they hear the joyful sound!
    How the weakest conquer when the Saviour they have found!
    How our grand battalions with triumphant power abound,
    As we go marching to Glory.

    3.
    So well make a thoroughfare for Jesus and his train;
    All the world shall hear us as fresh converts still we gain;
    Sin shall fly before us for resistance is in vain,
    As we go marching to Glory.

    Ah, memories…

    • to paraphrase Pogo,
      Jesus has a train?
      Why are we marching? Won’t he let us ride?

    • My mind keeps trying to shoehorn the words into the tune of Garry Owen. It doesn’t work.

      • des:
        Garry Owen won’t work at all. You’ve got to use this one:

  7. Empathy says that I put myself in womeone elses shoes and see it from their point of view. A person without a personal relationship with God and Jesus is a sad schell of a human being crying out to be saved.

    What an absolutely perfect example of a lack of empathy. I have nothing to add.

    • Empathy is understanding what other people need. That is what I do.

      • No, what you do is assert what people need, based on the belief that if you feel you need it, then they must need it, too. That’s not empathy, that’s narcissism.

      • Andd you know what everyone else wants? How could you? You don’t even know God!

  8. What Matthew was trying to say was this:

    Empathy says that I put myself in what I believe are someone else’s shoes and see it from what I believe is their point of view. I don’t take the word of people who are not in relationships with God and Jesus about whether they perceive themselves as shells of human beings, I just believe that they are and act accordingly. I also believe that they are crying out to be saved and are just too stupid, blinded by selfishness, or lost in sin to know it, so I act accordingly.

    There, I fixed it for you, Matthew, and I won’t even charge you for the spelling corrections.

    • How dare you assume that you know what I think or beleive? You have misrepresented my thoughts and ideas and believes to a horrible extent. How typical. So called atheists are always doing this. THey say taht a believer thinks this stupid thing and then laugh at what the so calleda atheist made up about the beiever. You are sick people.

      I know that when you face God upon your hopefully soon death that you wll realize the awesome massiveness of your mistake. Accept God into your heart. Accept the sacrifice of Jesus. Accept the Miracle of the Holy Spirit. And Repent.

      • So you’re saying you do take the word of non-Christians when they tell you they don’t feel like shells of human beings and subsequently respect their wishes not to receive your proselytizing?

        Btw, openly hoping for someone’s death to come soon is probably not the best way to go about convincing anyone you’re capable of empathy.

      • As I have stated beofer, without God there can be no freedom nor honesty. Deep within you soul you know what you want and need. You know that your denial of God, your hatred of God, is just part of you wanting to be god and do what you want without onsequences. All human being s want to know God. Are you implying that non believers, God haters, God deniers, so called atheists are not human? How DARE YOU!!

        I was once an athist. My anger toward God blinded me to His Love. Are you saying I was not human before? HOW DARE YOU!!!!!

        When, not if but when you accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior and accept God’s Love into your heart you will fine yourself apologizing to a lot of people. I am sorry that you and ohters on this site would rather engage in straww man arguments (claiming htat non believers are not human and personal insults rather than beign willing to accept the Good News. You are not only damning yourself to an eternity of earned punishment as an unrepenetent sinner but you are pulling in the souls of otherss. I pray for all of you.

      • You have misrepresented my thoughts and ideas and believes to a horrible extent.

        1. Pot, meet kettle.
        2. Sarcasm
        3. Humor (you may want to try it sometime)

  9. Andd you know what everyone else wants? How could you?

    I don’t, and neither do you, which is why it’s imperative to ask rather than assert. It’s the height of arrogance to think you know what’s best for everyone, especially if you never bothered to look at what anyone wants or needs other than yourself.

    I was once an athist. My anger toward God blinded me to His Love.

    Then you weren’t an atheist (or an anthist, either), but rather a cranky theist. You’re still cranky, only at others instead of your god. Atheists aren’t angry at your fictional god, they’re angry at jackasses like you who feel their imaginary friend gives them a license to bother others, and who stupidly believe that offensive behavior is somehow an example of empathy.

  10. God knows what people want which is to be Witnesssed to His Glory. God knows what is best for people and He sent His only Son to Save us. God is not fictional – read your Bible. Witnessing is not offensive, it is a welcome intrusion inot the sorry life of the un saved. You really don’t understand do you?

    • Witnessing is offensive, and if you did it to me in public then maybe you would get a chance to see if your god was real or not.

  11. C’mon, Matthew, ‘fess up. You’re a Poe, aren’t you? You’re definitely amusing.

  12. I am not a Poe. Nor am I any longer an atheist. When I was an atheist my inner sould cried out to be Witnessed and accepted back into the Fold. Through the study of the Holy Bible, the True Word of God, I found my way back to Salvation. I know what I needed. What I needed was help to find my way to accepting God into my life. This is what every human being wants whether the know it or not which is why I Witness. Don’t you understand that I am helping you?

  13. Why are you picking on Matthew? He is a God fearingm an who is trying to bring th eLove of God to those whohate God or are mad at God. All atheists cry out to be witnessed just as Matthew says.

  14. Matthew/Jam: This may come as a surprise, but I can look at your comments and see that they are coming from the same computer. Jam and Matthew are the same person writing from the same computer. Congratulations. You are not banned. You are being called out as a sockpuppet troll. You are not being called out as an asshole because of the content (?) of our Christo-fascist fucktard rantings. I disgree with what you say and how you say it, but you have a right to say it. You are being called for sockpuppet trolling — writing a comment under a different name in order to support the position taken under your original name.

    All: Sorry, I’ve been really busy. I’ll respond to your comments tonight.

    All: Note changes to my above comment. I really should not make decisions while angry. Jam and Matthew are the same person, the same computer, the same ‘so called.’ In the future, any time his monniker(s) or IP address show up, I plan to . . . . something.

    Using multiple names on line is not all that unusual. Inventing other people to support yourself is rather underhanded (luckily, he was real obvious about it).

    Anyway, shortstory is: Matthew/Jam is not only a Christo-fascist asshat douchebag, but he is also dishonest in his dealings with ‘fellow’ bloggers/commenters and is a perfect example of sockpuppet trollery.

    • I hope I don’t get banned. Some pages show me as “marc” and some as “desertscope.” I try not to do the whole sockpuppet thing, though.

      • I agree with Marc and Desertscope. Also with the Exterminator.

      • No, reconsidered. I should not make decisions when angry. Using different monnikers is not unusual nor is it necessarily bad. After all, I went through ‘Billy (A Liberal Disabled Vet)’, ‘Billy (ALDV)’, ‘Billy’, and then ‘(((Billy)))’ to be followed by ‘(((Billy))) the Atheist.’ And, on Pharyngula, because of the comment moderation, I show up as ‘iambilly.’ I do have different names through circumstance. I don’t think I have ever sockpuppeted, though.

        Larry/Ex: And I agree with him/them/ya’ll too. This asshole fucktard really pisses me off.

  15. You know what’s needed? A way that you could ban someone on a per post basis. I made that request with ID some time ago. The whole banning thing is unsettling, but I figure if you demonstrate you can’t behave in a thread, you’re gone, and if you can’t handle yourself in another thread, you’re gone again.

    Sockpuppetry is a major offense for blogs and forums though, but can you be surprised. For the religious, the ends always justify the means.

  16. Philly: Not a bad idea.

    I guess that what bothers me the most is not what the twit actually says. It’s the amount of time I spend dealing with a commenter rather than responses to the post. Don’t get me wrong. I know that things frequently go off topic and into some really wonderfully weird ways, but this is (I think) the third thread which has devolved into a discussion of a commenter — not what the commenter has said, but the commenter him/herself. (one went over a hundred comments fueled by discussions Matthew, not discussions with Matthew.

    I have toyed with the idea of disemvowelling particularly egregious comments (which (in Matthew/Jam’s case) would look like this:

    Why r y pckng n Mtthw? H s Gd frngm n wh s tryng t brng th Lv f Gd t ths whht Gd r r md t Gd. ll thsts cry t t b wtnssd jst s Mtthw sys.

    Wich actually subtracts nothing. He’s still masturbating but trying to convince us that there is a couple.

    Okay, bad example. I just pictured Matthew . . . . And threw up in my mouth a little. Bleh.

    Anyway. Your last (Philly) is amazingly accurate. If Matthew knows that he has the only TRUTH in the universe/multiverse, then any tactic is acceptable to bring us god haters and so called atheists realists to his delusion.

    • And when you’re convinced you know what’s best for people, you don’t need to have to listen to what they say or even bother examining their situations. You just do to them what you “know” is best for them, and that’s considered being good and empathetic. Pure insanity.

  17. Here in WordPress, you can edit readers’ comments. Why not just fix the person’s name so it always appears as something like “Smith/Jones”? Or add an editor’s note such as:

    [Editor’s Note: Smith and Jones appear to be the same person.]

  18. This is the kind of crap these jokers have been getting into:

    http://new.exchristian.net/2010/03/he-who-casts-first-stone.html

  19. Barbetto:
    That’s quite a story you linked to. It demonstrates starkly why everyone, including atheists, should care about theistic beliefs and the effects of theistic believers on the world around them. As Matthew/Jam has amply demonstrated in this thread (and others), a substantial number of these kooks can’t keep their kooky beliefs to themselves, they have to not only share their kookiness with us, but try to force us to be kooks too. Count me out.

  20. This group will be schooled in the “Way of the Master” method of witnessing to the lost.

    From Way of the Master, Tape 2: Electric Boogaloo;
    Witnesser: “Do you take pride in ignorance?”
    Witnessee: “Yes.”
    Witnesser: “Have I got the programme for you…”

    4. Breast cancer events such as “Race for the Cure” to illuminate the link between abortion and breast cancer.

    1. Women who breastfeed have a lower incidence of breast cancer than those that don’t.
    2. Women who have abortions don’t have babies.
    3. Women who don’t have babies don’t breastfeed.
    4. Therefore, abortions cause breast cancer.
    [Stony silence]

    1. Sexually oriented businesses such as pornography shops, strip joints, and XXX-rated theaters.

    So, a pub crawl?

    Matthew “{{insert virtually anything that Matthew’s posted here}}”
    It’s called “projection”, Matthew. Interaction and introspection are handy ways to minimize it. You may want to try them.

    the chaplain “C’mon, Matthew, ‘fess up. You’re a Poe, aren’t you?”
    I don’t know if he is, but I am. I’m terrible at it. You’d think I’d improve but, no. I should probably stop showing people my Poeness*.

    PhillyChief “And when you’re convinced you know what’s best for people, you don’t need to have to listen to what they say or even bother examining their situations.”
    It sounds like Matthew is using Way of the Master
    1. Make statement
    2. Be refuted.
    3. Repeat statement.

    * *giggle*

  21. Hi Billy,

    I haven’t been here for while, but whenever I look in, it seems that Matthew is spouting his nonsense. I’d go ahead and ban him. You aren’t going to penetrate his reality bubble. These people operate at a primitive, reward-and-punishment level of cognition; they’re obsessed with what they think of as “consequences”. Fine, let him have them.

    On the other hand, if you folks derive amusement from his ranting, that’s another story, but I can’t understand it. Matthew is shining validation for my ongoing assertion that we need to require a minimal level of intelligence as a prerequisite for voting (and probably breeding).

  22. (Frankly, I’d ban Him for Capitalizing every Other word.)

    • All Important Words are NOW Capitalized. Obviously you have Not read the Fundamentalist dictionary.

  23. Larry: I think I’ll go with your suggestion. Just adding the extra name, with an editorial comment,

    MO: Every time I hear ‘the way of the master’ in any context, I have this vision of a contest involving fishermen baiting hooks.

    Jeff: Thanks for stopping by. The thing is, I am more disturbed by his Christianist rantings than I am amused. The random capitalizition? Maybe English is his second language and German was first.
