Leader of the Anti-Abortion Movement Calls Followers “Fruits and Lunatics”

8 June, 2009

Nan, who writes the very enjoyable blog All The Good Names Were Taken (which is a great name for a blog), commented today (on Federal Investigation Begins into the Murder of Dr. Tiller):

Given that Cheryl Sullenger was apparently e-mailing back and forth merrily with Roeder, and she’s a major player in Operation Rescue, one can hope the investigation will be serious and a number of the Operation Rescue folks will find themselves doing perp walks.

Then, right after reading that, I read this over at Dispatches From the Culture Wars:

More Anti-Abortion Violence to Come?

Posted on: June 8, 2009 9:23 AM, by Ed Brayton

That’s what Tiller’s murderer is saying:

Scott Roeder called The Associated Press on Sunday from the Sedgwick County jail where he’s being held on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault in the death of Dr. George Tiller.Tiller was killed last Sunday while serving as an usher at the Lutheran church he attended in Wichita.

Roeder told the AP he know of “similar events planned around the country” as long as abortion is legal.

He would not elaborate.

So he was in damn near continuous contact with a leader of Operation Rescue.  And now he claims that there will be more attempted murders.  So how do the feds and the antis respond to that one (from Yahoo News)?

A Justice Department spokesman said the threat was being taken seriously and additional protection had been ordered for abortion clinics last week. But a leader of the anti-abortion movement derided the accused shooter as “a fruit and a lunatic.”

The FBI claims that they are taking this seriously (hopefully much more seriously than they have taken the anti-abortion radicals in the past).  I would presume (though I am not a law enforcement officer) that the links between Roeder and anti-abortion leaders.  Like maybe subpoena the phone and email records of Operation Rescue?  And expand the investigation to try to stop the next murder?  Hopefully, an honest and effective investigation will be forthcoming.

The anti-abortion terrorist support groups response?  Not quite so serious:  “a fruit and a lunatic.”  Damn, that shows support.  Roeder carries out a terrorist attack (terrorism is the use of violence (or the threat of violence) to create social or political change) which supports, in every way, the goals of Operation Rescue.  He even got guidance from one of their leaders.  And the response?  a fruitcake and a lunatic.  So are they describing every anti-abortion activist terrorist as fruits and lunatics?  I think they just called everyone who condones, supports, or refuses to decry the violence committed by abortion foes fruits and lunatics.

Makes sense to me.

  1. Maybe Operation Rescue should change its name to Fruit and Lunatic Rescue. Then they could operate like the other “rescues” I’ve heard of (e.g. Pit Bull Rescue, Greyhound Rescue, Exotic Animal Rescue) and go ahead and lock up the anti-abortion kooks in nice cages where they will be well fed and well groomed waiting for the day when they can be trained to be social enough to live nicely with a family somewhere…..Oh, I almost forgot: while they’re being cared for and re-trained they would also be neutered to help keep down the fruit and lunatic population! hehehehe

  2. Given that Obama and the Democrats are having a lovefest with the NRA (that’s the Numbnut Rifle Association), it’s hard to see that they’ll devote significant resources to the domestic terrorism front. After all, that might offend the NRA and the Republican Conservatives – they’re the ones saying ‘Go, Roeder’ out loud while the rest of the Republican establishment just mutters it under their breath.

  3. Rev: Are foetuses fruits and lunatics?

Ric: One can always hope, right?

    • Nope, sorry. I was referring to a change from saving the fetuses to saving their nutjob followers who are the fruits and lunatics. Re-reading my response it would seem bizarre and macabre if I were refering to the fetuses. I have a warped sense of humor but not quite THAT warped.

    • Rev: But they’re already saved for Jeebus, aren’t they? What need do they have of reason or sanity? Even fruits and nutjobs and lunatics can be saved for Jeebus.

  4. Hope is a moldy watermelon. You know, like they use for target practice.
