Merry Abstinence-Didn’t-Work Day!

25 December, 2009

Merry Abstinence-Didn’t-Work Day!

I’m in Florida visiting the in-laws.  Which, really, is not so bad.  (((Wife)))’s in-laws are far stranger than mine.

Last night, for dinner, I had pan-seared Ahi tuna crusted with black and white sesame seeds, served with pickled ginger, wasabi, and some wonderfully indescribable reduction.

Enjoy your day.

Pareidolia Run Amock! *

21 December, 2009

I will soon be heading to Florida to visit (((Wife)))’s family.  We do it this time of year as (((Wife))) and (((kids))) have a winter break this time of year to recognize “Abstinence Only Sex Education Doesn’t Work” Day.  Otherwise known as Christmas (and Saturnalia, Yule, Winter Solstice, and myriad others).  (This year, I do plan to actually count the crosses I see from I-81 in the Shenandoah and Cumberland Valleys.)

In honour of said “Abstinence Only Sex Education Doesn’t Work Day”, I give you this image (from Friendly Atheist (who’s not sure where it actually came from originally, so if anyone knows, let him know)): Read the rest of this entry ?

The Dangers of Saying “Happy Holidays”

18 December, 2009

Today, while in uniform (National Park Service), I (not on the clock at the time (I was out to lunch (physically, not just mentally))) wished someone “Happy holidays.”  And got a rash of shit. Read the rest of this entry ?

Thursday Gourmet — Pane del Cioccolato

17 December, 2009

Every year, I get in the mood to bake holiday breads.  One year, (((Wife))) did a fruitcake (and I don’t mean me).  It filled part of our refrigerator for eight weeks.  And bent a shelf.  I prefer breads which can be eaten, if not immediately, within a day or two.  Such as stollen or chocolate bread.

When I first ran across the recipe in an Italian cookbook, I was a little unsure.  Afterall, a chocolate bread would be sickeningly sweet, right?  I tried the recipe and discovered (much to my chagrin) I was wrong.  So, without further ado, here is a recipe for chocolate bread.  It is quick (a single rise bread), easy (as long as you are willing to knead the heck out of it), and delicious.  And it is wonderful for gifts (I baked six this afternoon, and have ten more rising right now as I type).

D.C. Council Approves Human Rights; GOP Representative Objects

16 December, 2009

Back in early December, the Washington D.C. Council decided that human rights really do apply to all humans.   The District will be joining Vermont, Iowa, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut (Maine and California voters (with heavy funding from outside the states) decided that some humans are not eligible for human rights).

“This is a culmination of the entire gay rights movement,” Richard J. Rosendall, a past president of the Gay and Lesbian Activist Alliance of Washington D.C., said after the vote. “We have spent many, many, years working toward this.” (from the Washington Post)

Unfortunately, Washington D.C. is not a state.  It is a federal district.  Though they do have home rule now (the days of the U.S. congress voting on parking meter increases is long gone), the congress has 30 days to object.  Luckily, there is no sign of opposition.

Oh.  Wait.  Read the rest of this entry ?

You Can’t Make This Shit Up

A Torture Device on a Christmas Tree

13 December, 2009

Back when I was in (I think) middle school (Western Maryland’s version of junior high) I began to hear various Christers (billboards, pamphlets, T-shirts in school (mostly (but not all) on students) and in conversation) telling me (and everyone else) to ‘keep Christ in Christmas.’  Which is when I decided that Xmas was a good way to annoy people who annoyed me.  Since then, the right-wing takeover of Christmas has continued apace (actually, I think it has accelerated with the War on Christmas idiocy). Merry Teabagging Christmas

10 December, 2009

Teabaggers (and I’m using the political definition, not the sexual one) have a habit of making themselves look idiotic.  Stupid.  Moronic.  Insane.  And they keep finding new and better ways.  Faux New’s war on Christmas meme has permeated the radical right, both political and religious.  So it comes as no surprise that some Teabaggers have now jumped into the WoC, where they will (presumably) be stir fried. Oklahoma OK? No, Oklahoma In-Sane!

8 December, 2009

A few months ago, down in the great state of Kentucky, a high school football coach got into a little bit of trouble (I say a little bit as the school district decided this was just okey-dokey) when he loaded up members of his football team and took them to a Baptist revival.  As I pointed out at the time, the argument that ‘it was voluntary’ doesn’t cut it.  Playing time for athletes depends upon the perception of the head coach.  Being on the team depends upon the perception of the head coach.  If a player is, for whatever reason, perceived as ‘not a team player’, the player will spend lots of time sitting on the bench.

Why do I bring this up?  A court case has been filed in another less-than-progressive state:  Oklahoma (from American Atheists). Read the rest of this entry ?
