Ultimate Protest

31 March, 2009

Do you ever feel like you want to protest something?  Or everything?  But each different thing that you protest needs a new sign, right?  Wouldn’t it be nice to have an all-purpose protest sign?  One that tells the world you hate everything that your version of god(s) hates?

Well, (via hissingteakettle (attribution under Creative Commons)) here it is: Read the rest of this entry ?

Yet Another Post About Atheism and Morality

30 March, 2009

How can atheists be moral without the word of god(s) telling them what to do?  In 1724, Christian theologian Richard Bentley, wrote: “no atheists as such can be a true friend, an affectionate relation, or a loyal subject”.  Or, as a chap pseudonymously named Gideon recently commented over at You Made Me Say It:  “After all, in your Godless universe, anything goes, right?” Read the rest of this entry ?

Fill a Void

28 March, 2009

I have got to be more careful when typing in search terms.  I recently bought a Tamiya Infantry Tank Mark II, Matilda (it’s an old kit (actually, the first tank model I ever built was this one (long ago)) and discovered a molding error in the turret.  I really don’t want to order a new turret, so I decided to check on-line for a way to fill a void in the styrene plastic.  I typed in “fill a void” and hit enter (I should have included the word ‘styrene’).  This is what came up.

Cars I Have Owned

28 March, 2009

Today I got into a long conversation with my best friend about cars.  What cars we had and, especially, what memories go with them.  As I enumerated my vehicles, I realized, damn, I’ve had a shitload of cars.  Here they are (in order):

  1. 1967 Volkswagen Beetle.  This little silver car was in pretty good shape when it became the family’s ‘kid car.’  By the time we were done, it had no running boards and the hood bore the imprint of the back end of a Ford Galaxy (drum brakes going downhill and a wet road are a bad combination).  We also rebuilt the engine once after throwing a rod. Our Godly American Heritage thinks the Constitution is Wrong!

27 March, 2009

From the Idaho Press-Tribune (via Americans United for Separation of Church and State):

A 77-year-old retired teacher by the name of Chuck Sheldon, founder and executive director of Our Godly American Heritage, has decided that public schools should be allowed to teach the Bible.  Read the rest of this entry ?

Recognizing the Reality Challenged

27 March, 2009

I’ve been blogging for a little over a year, now.  I have been both surprised and (this just shows how naive I was) surprised at some of the idiocy that has come in through the comments (oddly, nothing via email (yet)).  I have also become rather adept at realizing very quickly when I am dealing with a nutcase.

People like:  rshalom, SOLOMAN AZAR, the ever pompous Reginald Genovese, and mohmood are instantly recognizable.  Others, like marianne, take a while to show their true colours.

My question to all of you in the Aheosphere is:

What word (or phrase) clues you in the fastest that you are dealing with the reality challenged?

Hat Tip to Dr. Joan Bushwell’s Chimpanzee Refuge for the idea for this post.

The Thursday Gourmet

26 March, 2009

First, I must apologize profusely and effusively.  I screwed up last weeks recipe.  Along with the artichoke hearts, I should have included two cups of chopped green tomatoes or tomatillos (papery skins removed, if fresh).  Sorry.  Mea Culpa.  Mea Maxima Culpa.  Mea Maxima Fucking Culpa.

Today, a dessert.

Grilled Peaches

I know it is still way the hell too early for peaches, but grilling them makes even South American imports taste great. Read the rest of this entry ?

Abstinence Only Sex Education Does Not Work; Christian Right Says, “We Need More!”

25 March, 2009

Pete Seeger has little toleration for fools.  And, from his writings and his songs, his definition of fools includes those who feel that any problem, any war, any idea, can succeed if we only have enough determination.  One of the best was one called “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy,” an anti-Vietnam War song as appropriate today as it was 45 years ago.  The most powerful verse?

Well, I’m not going to point any moral;
I’ll leave that for yourself
Maybe you’re still walking, you’re still talking
You’d like to keep your health.
But every time I read the papers
That old feeling comes on;
We’re — waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool says to push on.

Cherry Picking

24 March, 2009

As I follow discussions on various blogs, I have noticed a certain, shall we say,  tendency among certain conservatives (Christian and Republican, religious and political) to cherry pick.  Yes, I know I am covering quite a few people with a very large blanket, but, bear with me.  I think it is a valid blanket statement.

This cherry picking can be seen on many levels.heigh-ho-cherry-oh Read the rest of this entry ?

Some Useless Humour

23 March, 2009

Actually, not useless.  With Norris and Beck trying to start a civil war, we need a laugh.  (This was sent to me by a really good friend.)

People are always asking how fights start between some people. Well, sit back, read and learn:

My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping channels.

She asked, ‘What’s on TV?’

I said, ‘Dust.’

And then the fight started….. Read the rest of this entry ?
