This data plays into their delusions. They are the 'chosen people' so obviously g*d must be testing them. If they survive a catastrophe g*d saved them, if not, it was g*d's will. *shakes head* There's no beating sense into them.

Hardship breeds desperation. Desperation breeds religion, especially when coupled with lower education.

Add Mother Nature's fury to the hardship list and you REALLY have something.

So if Republican tactics are to play up religion, patriotism (like religion), and scapegoating, then without the voting results, you can pretty easily predict what regions voted Republican with statistics on areas of hardship and poor education.

Delaney55: I, too, have lived in the Bible Belt. I fully understand that no area is 100% Repulican, Democratic, theist or atheist. I was merely commenting on the odd relationship between voting patterns and the chance of weather or (or, as many theists refer to it) an act of God. The party which claims the mandate from God dominates the areas most prone to death from acts of God. I did not mean to insult the minorities in these areas.

I live in a Republican state but I moved here years ago from California so maybe that's why I vote Democrat. There are a few of us smarter people in the "Bible Belt" that don't buy into all of that.

Maybe God is an atheist. Or a Democrat at the least.

More likely, though, is a convergence of violent natural phenomena and limited economic opportunity (which feeds conservative voting and increases religiosity) in these two areas.

Let me rephrase that:

1. God is an atheist.
2. God is a Democrat.
3. The data reflect a convergence, etc.

I like option #1. :)
