It's like the neo-conservatives think theres a limited supply of terrorists, and if we keep fighting we'll eventually kill them all. What they don't see is that their actions are creating an unlimited supply of terrorists. Everyday we stay in Iraq, every base we construct (as McCain has said he wants to do), every "enemy combantant" (usually innocent civilians) that we throw into Gitmo, every family we rip apart, every hospital we bomb, creates terrorists who deeply and passionately hate us. Its not religion, its not extremism, its pure hatred because of what we are doing to them. The same hatred I imagine the founding fathers felt after the Boston Massacre. The same hatred native Indians felt after British occupation. We keep thinking we're fighting an ideology (which is just a small portion of Muslims), but we're actually starting to fight people with righteous anger against us. And thats something you can't beat.
